The formula

V_B = V_CC × R₂ ÷ (R₁ + R₂) V_E = V_B − V_BE I_C ≈ I_E = V_E ÷ R_E V_CE = V_CC − I_C·R_C − V_E

Notice that β never appears. That is the entire point of divider bias: the emitter resistor sets the current from the base voltage alone, so the operating point barely moves when the transistor is swapped for one with twice the gain — or when it warms up.

What to watch out for

Divider bias is the standard arrangement because it is insensitive to the transistor itself:

  • The divider fixes the base voltage, and the emitter follows it 0.7 V below.
  • The emitter resistor then fixes the current, with no reference to β.
  • Negative feedback stabilises it. If the current rises the emitter voltage rises, which reduces the base–emitter drive and pulls it back.

This assumes a stiff divider — that the base draws far less current than flows through R1 and R2. As a rule of thumb the divider current should be at least ten times the base current, which is β times smaller than the collector current.

How do I bias a transistor?

Set the base voltage with a divider, then let an emitter resistor set the current. Aim for the collector to sit around half the supply so the output can swing equally in both directions before clipping.

Why does divider bias not depend on beta?

Because the emitter current is set by the base voltage and the emitter resistor, both of which are fixed by external components. β only affects the small base current, which the stiff divider is designed to ignore.

What does saturated mean?

The collector voltage has fallen to the emitter voltage, so the transistor cannot pass any more current no matter how hard the base is driven. It is acting as a closed switch, and it will not amplify there.
