Stone Veneer Calculator

Works out flat veneer and corner pieces for a wall. Corners are priced and sold separately by length, so they are calculated separately here too.

Total area of doors and windows.

mm

The scratch coat and bed behind the stone. 10–15 mm is typical for adhered veneer.

%

10% for cuts and for picking through the pallet — veneer is selected by shape as much as by size.

The formula

flat area = (wall area − openings − corner length × 0.15) × (1 + waste) corner length = total outside corner length × (1 + waste)

Corner pieces are L-shaped and wrap round the angle, so they cover wall on two faces. Each linear metre of corner takes care of about 0.15 m² that would otherwise be flat stone — forgetting the deduction means buying that area twice.

What to watch out for

Two numbers go on the order, and only one of them is an area:

  • Flat stone, by the square metre or square foot. The field of the wall.
  • Corner pieces, by linear metre or foot. These cost considerably more each, and running out of them mid-job is the usual cause of a second delivery.

Adhered veneer also needs what goes behind it: a weather-resistive barrier, metal lath, and a scratch coat before the stone is bedded. On an exterior wall that build-up is what keeps water out — the stone itself is not a weather barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much stone veneer do I need?

Take the wall area, subtract openings, then subtract about 0.15 m² for every linear metre of outside corner, and add 10% waste. Corners are ordered separately by length.

How much flat area does a corner piece cover?

Roughly 0.15 m² per linear metre, or about half a square foot per linear foot. Corners wrap two faces, so that area comes off the flat stone order.

Do I need a scratch coat behind stone veneer?

For adhered veneer on an exterior wall, yes — a weather-resistive barrier, metal lath and a scratch coat. The stone is cladding, not a waterproof layer, and water that gets behind it has to be able to drain.
