The formula

time = energy to add ÷ (charger power × efficiency)

Straightforward for AC charging. DC rapid charging tapers as the battery fills, so this gives the best case rather than the actual time.

What to watch out for

Typical charger speeds:

  • 2.3 kW — a domestic three-pin socket. Roughly 10 km of range per hour. Overnight top-ups only.
  • 7.4 kW — the standard single-phase home wallbox. About 30 km per hour; a full charge overnight.
  • 22 kW — three-phase, common at workplaces and destinations. Only useful if the car's onboard charger accepts it; many cap at 11 kW.
  • 50–350 kW — public DC rapid. 20–80% in 20–40 minutes, but only while the battery accepts full power.

The onboard charger is the ceiling on AC. Plugging a car limited to 7.4 kW into a 22 kW post charges at 7.4 kW.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

A 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80% adds 36 kWh. On a 7.4 kW home wallbox that is about 5.4 hours; on a 50 kW rapid, around 45 minutes; from a domestic socket, roughly 17 hours.

Why is rapid charging slower than the numbers suggest?

The car reduces charging current as the battery fills, to protect the cells. A 150 kW charger might only deliver that peak for a few minutes near the bottom of the charge curve.

Does a bigger charger always charge faster?

Only up to the car's own limit. On AC the onboard charger caps the rate — often 7.4 or 11 kW — regardless of what the post can supply.

How much range does an hour of charging add?

At 7.4 kW and typical consumption, roughly 30–40 km (20–25 miles) per hour. From a domestic socket, about a third of that.
