Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
The manufacturer sells 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows reports in binary units but labels them "GB", so it divides by 1,024³ and gets 931. Nothing is missing — the two are just counting differently.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes — 1,024². The gap widens at each step: it is 2.4% at kB and 10% by TB.
Why are internet speeds in megabits, not megabytes?
Networking has always counted bits. A 100 Mbps connection transfers at most 12.5 MB per second, since there are 8 bits in a byte.
